Last I wrote we had spent Saturday night in Willcox, Arizona.
Sunday, we got up and drove out of Arizona (yay!) and into New Mexico. New Mexico went fast, and then we were int El Paso. We got stuck in El Paso for 2 hours as we were trying to re-import R.'s car to the U.S. We gave up. The people at the border were not extremely helpful and it was becoming a pain in the ass, so we decided to deal with it later.
El Paso was... interesting... I got to walk around the downtown area a bit and it was all these shops selling very cheap clothes, shoes, and other goods. It was a bit of a hole in the wall town. Anyway - after that, we drove on some more and made it to Fort Stockton, Texas and stayed in a really crappy hotel. But, it was fairly cheap. It had cement walls and a sink that didn't drain proper and a bizarre shower that I unfortunately did not take a picture of. It was clean and dry and served as a place to sleep. There were crazy winds that night, so hard they kept closing the car doors on us.
We were very happy to leave Fort Stockton the next morning and head onto Austin. We arrived in Austin around 4:30 and found a place to crash. Last night, we ate some amazing Mexican food and wandered around the neighborhood we are staying in, South Congress. R. was very tired from doing all the driving. He was amazing - driving all that way with the Explorer and the sketchy trailer behind. It was very tiring for him... and I feel bad I was too wussy to drive that thing. He did an awesome job and got us and all our stuff here safe and sound.
Today, we laid around and relaxed and then went and drove around some and got some food and R. had a meeting w/someone at the Univ. of Texas. Then we went and had drinks and saw the Whole Food Flagship store. AMAZING. Seriously. Gorgeous. HUGE. Wonderful. And, after living in Vancouver, the prices on the food don't seem that terrible. Man, groceries are way more expensive in Canada. It's ridiculous. Now we are eating a yummy salad assembled from Whole Food products. After this, probably going downtown to have some CHEAP drinks. We found specials for $2 well drinks and $1 beers... Ahhh.... cheap drinks again. So Happy. Well, I am. R. is still taking it all in. Seeing what he thinks of the place. Tomorrow, we are finding a place to park the trailer and car, then potentially starting our drive to Georgia - we shall see how it goes.
I am going to do a video update when we get to Georgia of a bunch of different videos of the drive.
Until I write again.
