New Zealand Day 3 (November 27th)

Today we caught the ferry from Picton to Wellington. We got up, had a leisurely breakfast, and then got on the road. It was more stunning coastline and mountain passages and passing through little towns. That is one of the very interesting things about the highways here, you will be cruising along at 100/110 kmh (60-70 miles per hour), and then suddenly to come to town and the speed limit drops in half. These are the major highways, and they are all 2 lane, with passing lanes on occasion. Very tiny, winding roads. Generally in good condition, but it is just so different from what we think of as a highway in North America. It is more what we'd think of a scenic highway. Not that I am complaining at all about driving on scenic highways, it just so interesting that those are the biggest roads, minus the few multiple lane highways in the cities.

The ferry ride was 3 hours. We stood on the deck and we took off, then retreated inside to this lovely sun deck, where we sat and read. It was quite a smooth trip. At both the beginning and end, the ship weaved through passsages of small islands and pennisulas. The open strait, about half the trip, was a little bouncy at times, but overall, very nice ride. It actually lulled me to sleep for a bit.

Then we arrive in Wellington. After we exited the ferry, we drove toward downtown Wellington and found a place to park in this cheap lot where we could stay over night. R.'s allergies went insane, so we wandered around, finding him some allergies pills and taking in the city at the end of the work day. It was back to the camper van after that, and then dinner and a nap. R. was feeling wiped out, so I let him sleep longer while I wandered around. I got to enjoy a lovely sunset and take in a bit more of the city and what the nightlife was like.

Something both R. and I had noted was that Wellington seemed a bit like a mini-Vancouver at times. The financial area/business district was similar, as was the water front. We later found areas that were different, but there was definitely a similar feel at times. But, the biggest thing I noticed that was different, was that people were happier. For the longest time, I've been trying to put my finger on what made Vancouver a difficult city to meet people and why something seemed off about it. I always thought it was the fact that people weren't friendly, but it isn't that at all. People don't seem happy in Vancouver. I think a lot of people there are much more hung up on image, like L.A. Vancouver and L.A actually have similar cultural feel to me. And I think that's because people care so much about looking good, being thin and/or fit, fitting in, being part of a clique/scene, being cool, having money... etc. It's all so image driven. And therefore it does not seem like people are happy. Now, Wellingtonians, seemed happy. They were laughing loud and talking lots and didn't seemed like they were so hung up on what people thought of them. And I realized that was the difference. They let their happiness show and they just didn't care about a lot of the bullshit. It was refreshing. And it made me totally enjoy that city so much.

After my walk, and realization, I went back and woke R. and up and dragged him out for drinks. We stumbled upon this bar that was hosting a tour group for younger people – 18-35 or something. Anyway – they were all hammered and dancing on tables, so it was a very fun atmosphere. We then wandered up to the club/bar district, and took in the nightlife. It was quite happening for a Thursday night. Tons of people out. Lots of drinking and debauchery. We saw a fight that seemed to have started right outside a bar, then got broken up, then heated back up on the sidewalk, then got out of control, spiraled into a multiple person fight that ended up in the street, with a pile of about 10 guys. It was crazy. On the way back to the camper, we had one last beer at a karaoke bar, which was decorated totally in black lights and weird fluorescent scenes on the wall, such as the Statue of Liberty, the US Capitol building, Arch D'Triomphe..... so bizarre. But, it was a good place for a night cap. Then sleep.

Just north of Kaikoura, on the way to the ferry in Picton.

Beautiful road and hills. The roads are all like this.

New Zealand Day 2 (November 26th)

I got up and went on a run, then we gathered our stuff and headed over to the camper van pick up location. R's brother found us a deal where we could drive a camper van back up to the North Island and it would be free, minus having to pay for gas, and an extra passenger on the ferry. We are given 5 days to get the van from Christchurch to Auckland.

The camper van rental agency seemed very lame and uptight. Which sucked. Don't ever rent from Apollo if you are in New Zealand or Australia. But, after a bunch of stupidness like having to watch this very repetitive boring video on the camper van, we were finally off. It was an easy and lovely drive the first day. We headed north on Highway 1 toward Kaikoura, which is a a very cute beach town.

On the way up to Kaikoura, we passed through beautiful hill and mountains. It was just endless mountain after mountain and cattle sheep farms between. They were very Sound of Music mountains to me. Green grass covering the majority of them. There are hardly any stretches of ugly here. This place is just void of bad landscape. It is insane. Around every corner was something new and lovely. And so green. That area was just so, so green. We hit a bit of rain, but beyond that, it was very sunny and nice out. And blue skies. Wow. The skies were just so incredibly blue. As we got closer to Kaikoura, we winded through the hills to the beach, and it is quite spectacular as you pop through the mounains, and the dark rocky beaches are revealed and there stunning cliffs everywhere. We went through Kaikoura, and wandered out to a view point. We climbed up and were able to see all of Kaikoura. The area is a pennisula that once had been its own island. Silt and sand beds built up over time and made it part of the mainland. We also discovered what the ridges on the sides of hills were. They often look like the hill has steps, or is layered. They are called pa and were built by the Maoris so they could easily fight on the side of the hills. We had seems som eaerlier in the day and it is really cool to learn about what they were.

We ended up crashing in a picnic area right on the beach, just north of Kaikoura. It was amazing. Mountains oh-so-close to on one side and then amazing beautiful blue, green ocean on the other. I still cannot get over the color of the water here. It is so vibrant in color and spectactular to look at. We did actually see a bunch of gross, muddy rivers today as well, but I read on a sign there had been heavy rains and flooding. So, I think that's why they weren't looking so hot. We got to watch a lovely sunset and look out on the ocean in our own private little setting. It was the perfect end to a lovely day.

New Zealand Day 1 (Nov 25th)

I have been writing blog posts on my laptop and now am going to post a few. They are not all going to be day by day, but the first few are. So, recaps of the first days today - and then more to come. And they will be less detailed. I got carried away.

We landed in Auckland at around 6:30 a.m. After a stop at duty-free to pick up some liquor, we easily passed through Immigration and Customs. Then, it was a 6 hour layover until we flew out to Christchurch. We just hung out in the airport, took a nap, bought a few things, and ate until it was time to go.

Then it was on to the plane, and getting into Christchurch. We took the bus to the hostel we stayed at. We got a room to ourselves, which was nice. It was quite a nice little hostel, in an old house. We went on a run and wandered around some botancial gardens.

Christchurch is the largest city on the small island. The downtown is very cute, and there is a river that runs through town. Not not much else for the night but sleeping and easting and checking the email. We shall be back there at some point, so we shall have more time to check things out. But, it seemed very picturesque, as is pretty muuch everything in New Zealand.

All our junk.

Last pictures from the United States

Today, we are in Wellington. We picked up a camper van in Christchurch, drove up to Picton at the top of the South Island and took it across to Wellington yesterday. We are heading up to Auckland next to drop it off and get a rental car. We have seen so much amazing scenery so far. Wellington is a very, very, cool town. My blog posts will probably be a little bit behind, because we don't get regular internet access here. I am going to post the last pictures now from the United States, and then next time I write, I'll post the pictures from our first few days in New Zealand. I will also write more about that stuff too.

Also, to all my American friends/family - Happy Thanksgiving!

in L.A.

We have been in LA since Wednesday night. Tuesday, we drove all the way from Marietta to Shreveport LA. Then, we got up and drove to Dallas. After that, we flew to Seattle... then L.A. It was a long stupid day. But, we got to L.A. and got a convertible rental car (which has been awesome, because we have been able to enjoy some really awesome weather).

We have been crashing at R's brother's place, which has been really good. It's been so nice of him to have us. We spent Thursday running errands, walked around UCLA, hit up Santa Monica (and REI), and went to Venice Beach as well. Friday, we went out to lunch, mainly just hung around then went out to an L.A. bar. Today, seeing friends, more errands...starting to get ready to go.

We leave for Auckland tomorrow at 8 p.m. It is a 13 hr and 25 min flight (not fun. but we have ativan). We then have a 6 hour layover in Auckland before we flight down to Christchurch.

Both R. and I are getting excited finally. I think all the craziness driving/traveling is over and now we finally get to relax and take it slow. It should be awesome. I'm going to try and post the last of the pictures from the U.S. tomorrow and I'm working on editing our videos to put as well.

Keep you all posted on our adventures.

I've been neglecting my duties!

We are in Georgia... leaving today to head back to Dallas.

I haven't been updating, because I've been enjoying my time with family and friends. We arrived in Marietta, Georgia last Thursday night. We drove all the way from Austin to Marietta in one day. It was a crazy amount of driving, but good to just get it done. 16 hrs total - about 14 hours of driving. I did 750 miles, R. drove 220. Whew!

Friday was spent laying around and recovering, Saturday we went to Athens to see my sister and friends, Sunday was back to my mom and dad's, and monday was starting to get ready for our trip to New Zealand - by packing what we need to bring with us.

And now Minnie is in her resting spot for the next few months. She definitely had some stressful moments on the trips and now seems quite unsure about the new cats she has to live with, but I think she'll do OK here for a few months. I will miss her. I didn't realize how much until this morning when I sat there looking at her. Minnie and I have been through a lot together in nearly 2 years. Even though she is only a cat, I always had her when I was sad or down to hug and love. She helped me through a lot of bad stuff and for that I will always love her. I hope the next few months are good for her and I know my parents will love her lots.
She is a sweet old lady. She's been bounced around a lot these past few weeks, but I think feels better now that she seems to not have to move again.

*****
And now the next phase of our trip begins. Back to Dallas, Texas. Flying tomorrow to LA via Seattle (hey, free tickets, no complaints by me). In LA for until the 23rd. Then flying out on the 23rd to Auckland. From there, lots of bouncing around New Zealand. For 2 months. It feels crazy. Thinking we shall have 2 whole months of just exploring another country. To wander. To relax. To think. To clear our heads and think about the future and life. Or to not think about it. Whatever we want. I'm so glad we have the cash and time to do this.

So, now, to pack. Get back in the rental car. Need to drive about 9-10 hours today, so that we don't have far to Dallas in the morning.

Expect more updates and pictures now. And if you'd like post cards, please email me.

All for now

The last few days in pictures.

Pictures from Sunday AM leading up to arriving in Austin on Tuesday. Unfortunately, I haven't taken many pictures of Austin actually, but we have some videos, which will come in some future video post. Today was mainly spent getting the rental car, parking the trailer and Explorer, and then getting the rental car packed up. In a few minutes, more cheap drinks! Yay!

Hotel we stayed at in Willcox Arizona on Saturday night.

Adorable cat in the parking lot of the hotel. Was running around tons the night we got there. Following us back and forth to our room. Then was running around all the next morning. She was very tiny and skinny and I wasn't sure if she got fed regularly, so I gave her some. Also allowed me to get a picture of her. She was so cute. And ready to come with us by the time with left - at least for the food.

Cheesy tourist shop in middle-of-nowhere New Mexico.

The actual tourist stop. Just a shop with a bunch of crap.

On the road.

All Hail West Texas.

Sketchy motel in Fort Stockton, Texas on Sunday night.

Texas hill country, just to the west of Austin. It kept trying to rain on our way into town.

More Texas hill country.

Tomorrow is a long, long drive to my parents in Georgia. More updates once we arrive.

Austin Texas

Last I wrote we had spent Saturday night in Willcox, Arizona.

Sunday, we got up and drove out of Arizona (yay!) and into New Mexico. New Mexico went fast, and then we were int El Paso. We got stuck in El Paso for 2 hours as we were trying to re-import R.'s car to the U.S. We gave up. The people at the border were not extremely helpful and it was becoming a pain in the ass, so we decided to deal with it later.

El Paso was... interesting... I got to walk around the downtown area a bit and it was all these shops selling very cheap clothes, shoes, and other goods. It was a bit of a hole in the wall town. Anyway - after that, we drove on some more and made it to Fort Stockton, Texas and stayed in a really crappy hotel. But, it was fairly cheap. It had cement walls and a sink that didn't drain proper and a bizarre shower that I unfortunately did not take a picture of. It was clean and dry and served as a place to sleep. There were crazy winds that night, so hard they kept closing the car doors on us.

We were very happy to leave Fort Stockton the next morning and head onto Austin. We arrived in Austin around 4:30 and found a place to crash. Last night, we ate some amazing Mexican food and wandered around the neighborhood we are staying in, South Congress. R. was very tired from doing all the driving. He was amazing - driving all that way with the Explorer and the sketchy trailer behind. It was very tiring for him... and I feel bad I was too wussy to drive that thing. He did an awesome job and got us and all our stuff here safe and sound.

Today, we laid around and relaxed and then went and drove around some and got some food and R. had a meeting w/someone at the Univ. of Texas. Then we went and had drinks and saw the Whole Food Flagship store. AMAZING. Seriously. Gorgeous. HUGE. Wonderful. And, after living in Vancouver, the prices on the food don't seem that terrible. Man, groceries are way more expensive in Canada. It's ridiculous. Now we are eating a yummy salad assembled from Whole Food products. After this, probably going downtown to have some CHEAP drinks. We found specials for $2 well drinks and $1 beers... Ahhh.... cheap drinks again. So Happy. Well, I am. R. is still taking it all in. Seeing what he thinks of the place. Tomorrow, we are finding a place to park the trailer and car, then potentially starting our drive to Georgia - we shall see how it goes.

I am going to do a video update when we get to Georgia of a bunch of different videos of the drive.

Until I write again.
